Skin Care & Cleaning Products I use {updated}

One of the most common questions I get is “what do you use….?”. Because everyone knows if I’m okay with it, it’s probably pretty safe stuff!

If it’s not listed here, I’m not using it. This year we’ve combined uses of many things to keep it simple. I’ve tried to note things that get used to multiple things…

We have stopped using Seventh Generation completely this year. As a pioneer in natural cleaning products, it was disappointing to see them sell out to the big corporation Unilever. And shortly thereafter they added 2 chemical preservatives to their dish soap. That was enough for us.

I still use the EWG’s Skin Deep data base to check ingredients I’m not familiar with. Just because a product is free of things I’m allergic to, doesn’t mean it’s free of harmful ingredients, and I prefer to keep away from all harmful things!

Hair & Body

Body Lotion: Aveeno Skin Relief 24 Hr Lotion

Face Lotion: same as body

Soap: homemade bar soap by my mother (Leaning Ladder Farm) (also a laundry pre-treat)

Face Mask: Bentonite Clay mixed with apple cider vinegar (mix to make a paste)

Shampoo: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo

Conditioner: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner

Styling Products: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk, or Shea Moisture Curling Gel. Homemade oil with essential oils for morning refresh.

Shaving: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner and Dollar Shave Club razors (The 4X) for my PB. I’ve had to greatly reduce shaving as my skin can’t handle the damage. I use the same or this Panasonic Electric Shaver

Chapstick: Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm (If I ignore the “natural flavor” ingredient in Burt’s Bees. I’ve not had problems with it, so it seems they at this point continue to use real essential oils)

Household

Laundry Soap: Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder

Dish Soap: Planet Dishwashing Liquid

Hand Soap: Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap in a foaming soap dispenser

We also have and use vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for cleaning.

Makeup

I’ve only used these items once in the last year, so there is no guarantee I could use them regularly.

Foundation: Bare Minerals Original Foundation

Blush: Bare Minerals Blush

Mascara: Real Purity mascara

Lips: Honeybee Garden Natural Lipstick OR Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (If I ignore the “natural flavor” ingredient in Burt’s Bees)

Skin Care & Beauty Products 2016 {Updated List}

This list has been updated!! See the new list HERE!

makeup_brushesIt’s been about a year, so it seems like an update might be in order! 😉 Not much has changed. I’ve tried a couple new things, but mostly just stuck to the same products.

I continue to use the EWG’s Skin Deep data base to check products before I use them. Just because a product is free of things I’m allergic, doesn’t mean it’s free of harmful ingredients.

I’ve still not found a foundation I’m happy with. I have both the Honeybee Gardens powder and the Bare Minerals Original Powder. The Honeybee Gardens one might have made me itchy when I used it repeatedly. And the Bare Minerals I haven’t used enough times to really tell. As a result, I rarely wear makeup. I’d like to try and be braver. But really, it’s not that important in life… It’s just nice to have the option.

Skin Care & Beauty Products 2015

This list has been updated for 2016!! See the new list HERE!

makeup_brushesSince the allergy testing I decided I would pick products, and stick with them for at least a month. It can be super overwhelming picking your beauty products. The advertising is intense- offering to solve your every problem…. but how about a product not full of harmful chemicals, that I won’t be allergic to??

So here is my current list. Yes, it’s short and sweet. Less variable, less chance for disaster! If all goes well with these items, I may add 1-2 new items a month. But so far I’m very happy with this list 🙂

Hair & Body

Body Lotion: Aveeno Skin Relief 24 Hr Lotion

Face Lotion: same as body OR occasionally coconut oil

Soap: homemade by my mother (Leaning Ladder Farm)

Shampoo: Baking soda (no poo) OR Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo (mostly baking soda, shampoo once a month or less. Mostly for hairdresser’s use)

Conditioner: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner

Styling Product: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie & DevaCurl Mist-er Right

Makeup

Foundation: Honeybee Gardens Pressed Foundation

Blush: Bare Minerals Blush

Mascara: Honeybee Gardens mascara (LOVE this stuff!!)

Lips: Honeybee Garden Natural Lipstick OR Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (If I ignore the “natural flavor” ingredient in Burt’s Bees, I’ve not had problems with it… but technically that’s not on my safe list!)

Fabric Softener: Seventh Generation Free & Clear (I don’t use fabric softener, but use this to make my own drier sheets.)

Dish Soap: Seventh Generation Free & Clear

Dishwasher: Homemade OR Palmolive ECO (We are still working to find something we like. We have harder water, so it’s a challenge to find a soap that works well.)

Hand Soap: Seventh Generation Hand Wash
