Skin Care & Cleaning Products I use {updated}

One of the most common questions I get is “what do you use….?”. Because everyone knows if I’m okay with it, it’s probably pretty safe stuff! 

If it’s not listed here, I’m not using it. This year we’ve combined uses of many things to keep it simple. I’ve tried to note things that get used to multiple things… 

We have stopped using Seventh Generation completely this year. As a pioneer in natural cleaning products, it was disappointing to see them sell out to the big corporation Unilever. And shortly thereafter they added 2 chemical preservatives to their dish soap. That was enough for us. 

I still use the EWG’s Skin Deep data base to check ingredients I’m not familiar with. Just because a product is free of things I’m allergic to, doesn’t mean it’s free of harmful ingredients, and I prefer to keep away from all harmful things!

Hair & Body

Body Lotion: Aveeno Skin Relief 24 Hr Lotion

Face Lotion: same as body 

Soap: homemade bar soap by my mother (Leaning Ladder Farm) (also a laundry pre-treat)

Face Mask: Bentonite Clay mixed with apple cider vinegar (mix to make a paste)

Shampoo: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo 

Conditioner: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner 

Styling Products: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk, or Shea Moisture Curling Gel. Homemade oil with essential oils for morning refresh. 

Shaving: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner and Dollar Shave Club razors (The 4X) for my PB. I’ve had to greatly reduce shaving as my skin can’t handle the damage. I use the same or this Panasonic Electric Shaver

Chapstick: Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm (If I ignore the “natural flavor” ingredient in Burt’s Bees. I’ve not had problems with it, so it seems they at this point continue to use real essential oils)


Laundry Soap: Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder 

Dish Soap: Planet Dishwashing Liquid

Hand Soap: Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap in a foaming soap dispenser

We also have and use vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for cleaning. 


I’ve only used these items once in the last year, so there is no guarantee I could use them regularly.

Foundation: Bare Minerals Original Foundation

Blush: Bare Minerals Blush

Mascara: Real Purity mascara

Lips: Honeybee Garden Natural Lipstick OR Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (If I ignore the “natural flavor” ingredient in Burt’s Bees)

Monday mini-thoughts – 4/24/2017

I have seriously missed blogging! I’m not committing to anything, but hopefully there will be more in the near future! 

Things have been pretty scrambled lately…

so I introduce Monday mini-thoughts – whatever is going on, put on paper. Or blog…

  • the peepers in the brook started singing about a week ago! That means spring! They were a little quiet last week, because it was chilly again. But I know they are there…
  • the Canadian goose pair are back, and making the morning commute from the pond to the swamp, a-honking along. 
  • got 2 bike rides in this past week.
  • this made me miss my t@b
  • I miss salad. 
  • so easy {recipe} (even better if you let sit overnight I think…)
  • I dyed a white washcloth I’d crocheted yellow with turmeric. It came out pretty cool! I felt super crafty.

This Year’s Goals – 7 of 12

So I made a list of things I’d like to do or get done this year. I’m determined to not be doing all of them in December of this year… But instead spread them out over the year.

So I missed a month… I’ve been trying so hard to just keep up, I decided some things could wait till I had time to think. The past 2 months have seen a lot of allergy flares, which besides being annoying and uncomfortable, also leaving me wiped out since my body’s using all it’s resources to freak out about some allergen… So I kept up with the important stuff! 

1. Paint at least 2 rooms this year.

I do believe I have picked out almost all of my colors! Whoa! I’m preparing to start coloring soon…. 🙂 

2. Start doing yoga regularly.

I made it to yoga with my friend!  Only once, and then allergies got crazy, so I haven’t gone again yet. But it was a lot of fun, and I will totally go again soon! 

3. Write 1 letter of encouragement every month.

Owe 7 now…

4. Make sushi at home.

No sushi at home this month. 

5. Organize my closet- lose the things I don’t wear, get new things I can and will wear.

A couple more things removed this month…

The big excitement of recent is when I suddenly started reacting quite severely to all my bras. All of which have underwires… So there began a frantic search to find nickel free ones, and get them shipped to me. 

So while I wasn’t planning to add anything this month… There was a change of plans! I’ve been very happy with my Rosa Faia bras by Anita. I’ve been wearing them exclusively for almost a month and my skin is almost healed and back to normal! I still have some bumps on my back where the hooks were, but they are fading finally. 

6. Make time for fun/hobbies. Find new ones I like.

We went camping! It was the first time out to our favorite spot with the camper…. It was a little wet and damp for part. But the view is never bad… 😉 


And we hung our hammocks in our great room. I’ve found it to be an outstanding place to use for everything. The location is great. I have a delightful woven hammock, and it breathes better than a chair, so my skin is always happy!!
